When in Durango, you really need to take advantage of the Durango Silverton train ride. We, really enjoyed the train, and the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. I would really recommend doing the open-air cars for the best views when going from Durango to Silverton. And maybe the bus or one of the other train cars on the way back. We took the bus back and the driver was very informative about the history and areas on the route back to Durango.
The Durango Silverton Train Museum is very cool. It is a little hard to find as it is located across the tracks on the back part of the lot of the train station in downtown Durango. It takes a good hour and half to really see it all and it extra cool for the kids. The best part of the museum is that it is FREE to go into. Make sure you take the time go see it, it is well worth it.
We walked through the Durango Silverton Train Museum after taking the Polar Express with our daughters. It was late so we didn’t have a chance to go through the whole place but there was a lot of very interesting things to look at including several old trains and cars that they have inside the building. We will definitely go back when we have more time and look around more! A must place to visit if you love trains or are in the area and looking for something interesting and informative!
Wow!!! I grew up in Cortez, Colorado and only rode the train a couple of times. I never knew that this museum behind the tracks existed until recently. I was amazed at the amount of really interesting and unique collections in this museum. Even if you don't like trains, miniature trains, or history...this place will have something that will catch your eye. It's completely free. You've got to check it out!
